Ode to Summer Vol.1

Ode to Summer Vol.1

Through my early 20s, I’d spent many hours on the road travelling. Not in a holiday exploring sense, but for work. A 45-tonne, 30-wheeled truck and trailer transporting freight along many of the main arteries that keep the south of New Zealand alive. There’s been often a time I’ve passed a valley turn-off, an unpaved road and those stretches of tarmac that no truck would fit, nor the timeline to allow me to explore beyond my imagination. It always had me thinking, I wonder what’s down there. I’d heard stories about Molesworth, stories of freedom, adventure, a vast scree-scared mountainscape, time with friends and the feeling of remoteness.

The access gate is only open a select few months of the year, Molesworth is New Zealand’s largest working high-country farm and public access is only allowed in the summer months. This year my summer plans aligned perfectly with my best buddy Tom. We threw our gear into the canopy of his 4x4 and headed out for a night in the mountains.
